Summer bucket List

In honour of all our adventurers, here are a few region specific suggestions to ensure you don’t fall into a boredom hole!

Cape Town:

1. Table Mountain Hike – a Cape Town classic that has to be done! And it’s not just a simple case of up the mountain! There are a wide variety of different routes for you to try, each offering their own spectacular views and perspectives. ‘Platteklip’ offers a grueling straight up the mountain approach, but still provides the views on the town side of the mountain. You could also try the ‘India Venster’ route, that meanders up underneath the cable cars, eventually wrapping around the camps bay side of the mountain. As said before there are a wide variety of routes, just make sure you do a little recon of your chosen route before embarking, to make sure you are fully prepared and don’t get lost!

1. Chapmans Peak Drive – Up for a drive? How about one of the most spectacular 9km drives in the world? The winding connection between Cape Towns hout bay village and Noordhoek beach offers some of the most breathtaking ocean views as you glide across the edge of the Chapmans Peak cliffs. Just make sure it’s not a windy day as the route will generally be closed due to safety reasons.

1. West Coast Mission – Cape Town is epic, but if you ever want a break from the city life, take a drive up the west coast and visit some of the little stops along the way, eventually reaching gorgeous Langebaan at the end. The main road is scattered with off roads to little villages as well as the always beautiful West coast National Park.

1. Wallys Cave – Lions Head is a Cape Town must do, but a slightly more unknown spot along the way, and very popular, is Wally’s Cave. Once you reach the ladder portion of the Lions Head climb, you simply continue straight and wind around the koppie until you come to a beautiful little cave where you can kick back and enjoy a spectacular Camps Bay view.
2. Boulders Beach – An absolute must do outing is going to see the penguins down at Boulders beach in Simons Town. Hop on the M3 all the way down to Muizenberg and then simply follow the main road until you reach the beautiful little seaside village, Simons Town. Keep along the main road until you see the Boulders beach sign. The area is a protected reserve for the penguins but you will be able to get closer than you ever would to them in their natural and comfortable environment. The experience is surreal!

Joburg:

1. Soweto Towers – Joburg is a vibrant city on the come up, full of rich history and fun things to do. Number one on our list is the Soweto Towers! There are a whole lot of activities offered here however the most popular would be the tower bungee jump! Get your blood pumping, step out of your comfort zone and jump! You can also base jump, climb the towers and have a round of paintball!

1. Maboneng Precinct – east of the CBD, an initiative has been taken to breathe new life into the Maboneng precinct and on a Sunday you cannot beat the vibe! The precinct has become a bustling hub for the cities creatives, young and old full of coffee shops, markets and cocktail lounges. It’s a sophisticated party spot with an artistic focus.
2. Monte Casino Bird Park – with over 60 different species roaming the aviary, walk among the descendents of dinosaurs in the Monte Casino Bird Park, Fourways. The animals roam freely while you wonder the park or find a nice place to sit and relax. Great for kids and adults, and truly beautiful experience.
3. Walter Sisulu Gardens – the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens is a Johannesburg treasure, full of breathtaking hikes and beautiful picnic spots. In the heart of the park you’ll find a huge 70m high waterfall. Whether you’re putting on your hiking boots or pulling through with your picnic baskets, you won’t find a more beautiful place to spend an afternoon in Joburg.
4. Red Bus tour – Take a red bus tour and explore the city this summer! Even if you’re a local it never hurts to be a tourist at home! From the top of an open top bus, see the city like never before, exploring both the suburbs and inner city. See this you never knew existed, find a new hangout or just appreciate the place you live in and its rich history. Pop into the cities rich museums, chow down on some local food and enjoy!

Durban:

If you’re visiting South Africa’s east coast city, then peep a few options below to get the full Durban Experience.

1. Ushaka Marine World – Located in the heart of the city, Ushaka is a all round funtime institution! As you enter and make you way past all the curio shops and food stops, you’ll come to a colossal water park, fun for all ages. Adjacent, you will find a beautiful aquarium set in an shipwreck theme. This fully immersive ocean and water experience is a great time for the whole family.
2. Moses Mabida Stadium – The Stadium, built for the 2010 world cup, is more than just a spot to watch your favorite teams clash. The stadium offers a range of epic and exhilarating activities, fun for everyone! The adventure walk entails having you and a few mates making your way up and over the signature arch that runs above the centre of the stadium until you reach the top, met with breaktaking views of the Durban surrounds. Feeling lazy? Well you can just hop on the Skycar, the Adventure walk alternative. Lusting for adrenaline? Take a swing on the world’s largest swing, an 80m drop into a 220m arch of wind in your hair.
3. Wavepark at Gateway – We know a shopping mall is not your typical holiday stop unless you really need to, but this mall has something a little different on offer. Make your way through the mall to find a climbing wall and further along, the Gateway Wave park! If the waves are a little flat today, definitely go check it out! Endless waves for pros and beginners alike, young and old.
4. Johnny’s Rotis – a Durban institution, Sunrise Chip n’ Ranch, or “Johnny’s”, is a Durban must, even for the locals. While the facade of this establishment looks rather scruffy and run down, this is all part of the experience. Be a lekker local and pick up and chip and cheese roti with mutton gravy that will leave you full for days!
5. Natural Science Museum – Museums should always be on a tourist to-do list and Durban has a wonderful offering in the Natural Science Museum. With a number of epic exhibitions, including a life size T-Rex Model, this place will have you learning in style! Fun for kids and adults alike, definitely worth spending some time here!
